What is ASTM A36 Steel?
ASTM A36 is the most common structural steel grade in North America. It's a carbon steel with moderate strength, excellent weldability, and cost-effectiveness for general construction applications.

- Yield Strength: 36,000 psi (36 ksi) minimum
- Tensile Strength: 58,000-80,000 psi
- Elongation: 20% minimum in 8" (200mm)
- Modulus of Elasticity: 29,000 ksi
A36 Steel Hardness
Brinell Hardness: 119-159 HB typical range
Rockwell Hardness: B-scale 70-90 HRB
The moderate hardness makes A36 easy to machine, cut, and weld while maintaining structural integrity.

- Carbon: 0.26% max
- Manganese: 0.60-0.90%
- Phosphorus: 0.04% max
- Sulfur: 0.05% max
- Silicon: 0.40% max
- Copper: 0.20% min (when specified)

Working with A36 Steel
Welding
Excellent weldability with most processes (SMAW, GMAW, SAW). No preheating required for most applications under 1" thick.
Machining
Good machinability. Brinell hardness of 119-159 allows efficient drilling, milling, and turning operations.
Fabrication
Responds well to bending, punching, and forming operations at room temperature.
When to Choose A36 vs Other Grades
Choose A36 when:
- Cost is a primary concern
- Moderate strength is sufficient
- Working with plates, bars, or shapes
- General fabrication requirements
Choose A992 or higher grades when:
- Building codes require higher strength
- Long spans with heavy loads
- Seismic design requirements
- Weight reduction is critical
